Red and Gold Celebrates Seniors with AEC Rout, Reed Scores Three in Seven-Point Performance

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (10/19/2024) - Rested and eager to open their Atlantic East Conference (AEC) season, Gwynedd Mercy University (3-11, 1-0) celebrated their senior class with an impressive 5-0 triumph over Neumann University (4-10, 0-2). The Griffins' offensive outburst was headlined by a seven-point performance by junior midfielder Mackenzie Reed (Philadelphia, Pa.), who followed an opening goal from senior defender Laura Filchner (Bath, Pa.) (1-0, 21:16) with a tally at the end of the 33rd minute (2-0, 32:57) and assisted Filchner on her second score in the 38th minute (3-0, 37:20), before caging two more shots (42:54, 59:19) for her second career hat trick.

Prior to the start of the contest, the Red and Gold recognized Filchner along with her fellow seniors; midfielder Cheyenne Avellino (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.), forward Ashley Berry (Philadelphia, Pa.), forward Maddie Jeter (Bensalem, Pa.),goalkeeper Morgan Lawless (Bristol, Pa.) for their contributions to the Gwynedd Mercy University field hockey program.

Griffin Highlights
  • Gwynedd Mercy University controlled the contest and out shot Neumann University by a 16-4 margin despite an equal amount of penalty corners; 7-7.
  • Lawless earned her third win (3-5) of the season and needed to make only one save to do so thanks to the strong play of the Red and Gold backfield.
  • Reed took seven of the Griffins' 16 shots. Filchner took three, Avellino recorded two, and four others attempted one apiece.
Gwynedd Mercy University continues their AEC schedule on Wednesday, October 23, when they visit Immaculata University for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
