Griffins Punish Pacers in AEC Victory, Marable Shines in Milestone Performance

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (1/24/2024) - Junior forward Mike Marable (Philadelphia, Pa.) was the ringleader for Gwynedd Mercy University (11-8, 4-2) in a thrilling 99-77 Atlantic East Conference (AEC) victory over Marywood University (8-10, 3-3) that included his 1,000th career point (73-53, 13:22) among a career-high 20. The Pacers scored the first four points (4-0, 18:12) of the contest, but never really threatened the Griffins' control of the contest after a 17-2 run gave the Red and Gold their initial double-digit lead; 17-6 (12:51). Gwynedd Mercy University's first-half lead maxed out at 19 points (53-34, 0:36) before settling at 17 points (53-36, 0:01) for intermission. In the second half, the Griffins extended their advantage to 21 points, 59-38, with 17:22 still to play and this time maxed out the spread at 27 points, 80-53 (11:25), before settling for their 22-point victory. Prior to tonight's contest, junior guard Aquil Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa.) and graduate guard Manny Clark (Pottsgrove, Pa.) were recognized for reaching career milestones as both were presented with their 1,000-point balls.

Griffin Highlights
  • Gwynedd Mercy University earned their 53-36 halftime advantage without even visiting the free throw line.
  • The Red and Gold defense was suffocating, holding Marywood University to 32.3% (21-of-65) shooting and forcing them into 13 turnovers.
  • Meanwhile, the Griffins finished the affair shooting 62.1% (41-of-66) from the floor, 54.5% (12-of-22) from the three-point line, and 83.3% (5-of-6) from the charity stripe.
  • Five Griffins - all starters - finished in double figures; Marable led the group with his 20 points, but made his mark on the game in several ways with six rebounds, four assists, two blocks, and two steals.
  • Senior guard Aziz Parker (Westampton, N.J.) recorded 19 points, seven rebounds, and a pair of assists.
  • Junior forward Dom Thomas (Mullica Hill, N.J.) finished with 13 points, three rebounds, an assist, and a steal.
