Ambler, Pa. - (4/3/2023) - Both juniors,
Jocelyn Baumeister (Willow Grove, Pa.) and
Ashley Focht (Harrisburg, Pa.) kept the University of Valley Forge (7-9) off the scoreboard as Gwynedd Mercy University (13-7) swept today's non-conference doubleheader with finals of 8-0 (5 innings) and 3-0.
Game 1
- Gwynedd Mercy University gave Baumeister more than enough run support in the opener thanks to a six-run third inning and a fourth-inning, two-run single through the box from sophomore right fielder Carly Maw (Bensalem, Pa.).
- The Griffins scored their third-inning runs with nine hits; junior second baseman Shylynn Cordero (Allentown, Pa.) (2-for-3, RBI) started off the hit parade and was one of three to record at least two hits in the game. Baumeister (2-for-3, R), Focht (2-for-3, R, SB), and Maw (2-for-3, 3RBI) were the others.
- Baumeister held the Patriots to two hits and two walks while striking out seven in the win (5-3).
Game 2
- After a first-inning sacrifice fly from sophomore first baseman Shannon McLaughlin (Haddon Heights, N.J.), senior center fielder Emma Carney (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) batted-in sophomore left fielder Ally McDaid (Maple Glen, Pa.) with a single to left and hustled home on a passed ball just moments later.
- McDaid was 2-for-4 with a run and a stolen base. Carney was 2-for-3 with a run and a run-batted-in (RBI). Sophomore designated player Kaylee Colantano (Clinton, N.J.) was 2-for-3.
- Focht held the Patriots to four hits and four walks while striking out three in the win (6-4).
Gwynedd Mercy University returns to Atlantic East Conference (AEC) play on Wednesday, April 5, when they visit Immaculata University for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.
