Arlington, VA - (4/29/23) - The Gwynedd Mercy Women's Lacrosse Team fell to Marymount University 6-23 in the first round of playoffs on Saturday afternoon.
Highlights:
- Junior captain, Kristin Varilla, led the Griffins with 5 points (4 goals, 1 assist) on the team's 6 goals. She also won 2 of the team's 9 draw controls.
- Sophomore midfielder, Cheyenne Avellino, opened up the scoring for Griffins finding the back of the net twice. Avellino worked hard on the circle earning 4 draw controls.Â
- The Griffins scored twice the amount of goals in their second time facing the Saints this season.Â
- Senior goalkeeper, Reilly Owens, had 6 saves, 3 groundballs, and a caused turnover in the last game of her career.Â
- She ends her career with a total of 525 saves and a .459 save percentage facing 1,473 shots over 4 years.Â
- Owens picked up 159 groundballs scooping up more each year than the year before (12 in 2020, 17 in 2021, 63 in 2022, 67 in 2023). She currently leads the conference in groundball pickups this season.Â
- She finished her career with 56 caused turnovers interrupting significantly more feeds in her last season (9 in 2021, 17 in 2022, 30 in 2023). Â
- Owens is 6th in groundballs, 15th in caused turnovers, and 2nd in saves in program history. Â
