Chester, Pa. - (4/12/2023) - Gwynedd Mercy University (15-9) broke from their Atlantic East Conference (AEC) schedule today, Wednesday, April 12, to visit Widener University (12-14) for a pair of early evening contests. The Pride overcame early Griffin scores for wins in both ends of the twin bill; the first was tight - 2-1 (8 innings) - and the second was not - 11-1 (5 innings). Junior third baseman
Grace Scally (Philadelphia, Pa.) totaled three hits (3-for-4) with a double and score in the second inning of the opener. There, junior pitcher
Ashley Haggerty (East Norriton, Pa.) took the loss (2-1) despite holding the Pride to one earned one on six hits and a walk.
Griffin Highlights
Game 1
- Gwynedd Mercy University scored their only run of the affair in the second inning; a leadoff double from Scally resulted in a run after a ground outs to short and a first base. Sophomore right fielder Carly Maw (Bensalem, Pa.) knocked in the run.
- Scally also recorded a two-out single in the seventh inning. So did senior center fielder Emma Carney (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.), but neither the Griffins came away empty handed before the contest went to extra innings.
- Haggerty threw 84 pitches in 7.1 innings.
Game 2
- Gwynedd Mercy University scored early in game two as well; in the first inning, junior left fielder Shylynn Cordero (Allentown, Pa.) reached second on an error by the Pride pitcher, she reached third on a sacrifice from freshman shortstop Camryn Kinney (East Stroudsburg, Pa.), and scored soon after on grounder to second base from junior second baseman Ashley Focht (Harrisburg, Pa.).
- Scally (1-for-1, BB), senior pinch hitter Allison Ross (1-for-1), and junior pitcher Jocelyn Baumeister (Willow Grove, Pa.) (1-for-2) were responsible for the Griffin hits.
- Scally also held Widener University scoreless over the final two inning of the affair.
Gwynedd Mercy University returns to their AEC schedule on Saturday, April 15, when they host Neumann University for a 12:00 p.m. Senior Day doubleheader.
