Scally and Focht Power Griffins to AEC Split with Knights

Ambler, Pa. - (3/31/2023) - Junior third baseman Grace Scally (Philadelphia, Pa.) blasted a three-run shot to left field in the third inning of game two; her first career home run gave Gwynedd Mercy University (11-7, 1-3) a 5-3 advantage. Eventually, the Griffins would have to regain their edge over Neumann University (6-15, 1-1) in today's Atlantic East Conference (AEC) doubleheader with another run scoring on a Scally double in the fifth inning and junior designated player Ashley Focht (Harrisburg, Pa.) singling in a pair of runs in the sixth that afforded Gwynedd Mercy University a 8-6 victory. In the opener, the Knights grabbed a 3-0 lead before a two-run single from junior first baseman Allison Ross (Philadelphia, Pa.) made it a one-run final; 3-2.

Griffin Highlights

Game 1
  • Gwynedd Mercy University had a runner aboard in each of the first five innings, but they did not bring a run home until Ross singled in senior center fielder Emma Carney (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) and Scally with a two-out bal back through the box.  
  • Sophomore left fielder Ally McDaid (Maple Glen, Pa.) singled in her first two at-bats of a 2-for-4 effort.
  • Carney doubled with one out in the second inning; she was 1-for-2 with a run scored.
  • Focht (1-for-3) and sophomore catcher Kaylee Colantano (Clinton, N.J.) (1-for-3) accounted for the other Griffin hits.
  • Focht took the loss (5-4), allowing two earned runs on eight hits. She struck out one.
Game 2
  • Gwynedd Mercy University took a 5-3 lead with their four-run third inning. A lead off single to left from junior left fielder Shylynn Cordero (Allentown, Pa.), a bunt single from McDaid, a sacrifice from Carney, and a Focht single to center cut the lead Neumann University by a run, 3-2, before Scally's three-run gave the Griffins the advantage.
  • The Griffins matched the Knights in the final two innings of the contest thanks to Focht, who hustled home on a Scally six-inning double and knocked in a pair of runs with a single in the seventh inning.
  • Focht was 4-for-4 with two runs and for runs-batted-in (RBI). Scally was 2-for-4 and knocked in three runs.
  • McDaid (2-for-3, R) and Cordero (2-for-4, 3R) record two hits apiece.
  • Junior Ashley Haggerty (East Norriton, Pa.) earned the win (2-0) in relief; she allowed one hit and recorded one strikeout. in the final 1.2 innings of the affair.
Gwynedd Mercy University breifly breaks from their AEC schedule to host the University of Valley Forge for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader on Monday, April 3.
