Cyclones Take Two From Griffins In First AEC Action of the Season

Ambler, Pa. - (3/29/2023) - Gwynedd Mercy University (10-6, 0-2) scored the first run of today's Atlantic East Conference (AEC) doubleheader with Centenary University (NJ) (9-9, 3-1) on a third-inning single from junior second baseman Shylynn Cordero (Allentown, Pa.), but a six-run fifth inning was enough to carry the Cyclones to an eventual 6-2 win. In game two, the Griffins took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with a double from junior third baseman Grace Scally (Philadelphia, Pa.), a botched fielder's choice off the bat of junior pitcher Ashley Focht (Harrisburg, Pa.), and a pair of singles to right field from junior designated player Jocelyn Baumeister (Willow Grove, Pa.) and sophomore right fielder Carly Maw (Bensalem, Pa.). Unfortunately, the Cyclones regained the lead with four runs of their own in the top of the fifth inning, 7-4, and completed their sweep with an 8-5 victory over the Griffins.

Griffin Highlights

Game 1
  • With two out in the bottom of the third inning, Cordero made use of a leadoff walk to senior center fielder Emma Carney (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) with her two-out single to center field.
  • The Griffins added their second run late; Carney led off the seventh inning with a double to right center and eventually made it all the way home on a two-out throwing error by the Cyclones' third baseman.
  • Cordero was 1-for-4 with a run-batted-in (RBI). Carney was 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs
  • Baumeister took the loss (4-3), allowing six runs on 10 hits. She struck out six.
Game 2
  • In the Griffins' half of the fourth inning, a walk to Cordero, an error by the pitcher, and a Scally double down the right field line plated the first of four runs. another Cyclone error and a Baumeister single to right field brought home two more and forced a pitching change. Afterwards, a wild pitch and a single to right from Maw gave Gwynedd Mercy University the lead; 4-3.
  • In the fifth inning, the Griffins looked to rally once again. Unfortunately, they were only able to trim a 7-4 Centenary University lead by a one run as Scally's two-out double to left center easily scored freshman shortstop Hannah Smith (Levittown, Pa.).
  • Scally was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI. Maw was 2-for-3 with a RBI. Baumeister and Focht also knocked in runs.
  • Focht took the loss (5-3), allowing four earned runs on 14 hits. She struck out one.
Gwynedd Mercy University continues their AEC schedule on Friday, March 31, when they host Neumann University for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.
