Griffins Improve to 10-2 With Extra Inning Thriller and Offensive Outbreak

Camden N.J. - (3/20/2023) - Gwynedd Mercy University (10-2) looked to continue its historic start to the season as they traveled to Rutgers-Camden (2-12) for their doubleheader affair. In game one, junior pitcher Jocelyn Baumeister (Willow Grove, Pa.) played hero for the Griffins when in the eighth inning she hit a single to center field to allow junior utility player Shylynn Cordero (Allentown, Pa.) to cross home plate and be the game-winner for Gwynedd Mercy with a final score 3-2. In game two, junior captain pitcher Ashley Focht (Harrisburg, Pa.) did it all for the Griffins as she had a team-high two runs batted in (RBI) and pitched six innings giving up five earned runs, on 11 hits, one walk, and one strikeout eventually giving the Griffins a 6-5 win.

Griffin Highlights - Game 1:

  • In the first inning, a couple of walks allowed senior outfielder Emma Carney (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) to drive in a run with her RBI single to center field and giving the Griffins an early 1-0 lead.
  • In the sixth inning with the score being tied 1-1, Carney made solid contact with the ball back to the pitcher. With her great hustle down the first base line, the pitcher was forced to rush the throw to first base resulting in a throwing error by the pitcher and allowing junior captain infielder Grace Scally (Philadelphia, Pa.) to put Gwynedd Mercy back on top 2-1.
  • With the Griffins up by one in extra innings and a runner on third for Rutgers-Camden, Gwynedd Mercy was going to have to make a play on defense. A sacrifice fly attempt was hit to center field and Carney threw the runner out at home and eventually gave Gwynedd Mercy a 3-2 win in game one!
  • Junior pitcher Ashley Haggerty (East Norriton, Pa.) got the start in this one and pitched a gem only giving up one earned run on five hits in five innings of work, however, Baumeister did get credit with the win (4-1) pitching three innings giving up one earned run on three hits.

Griffin Highlights - Game 2:

  • Focht got things started for the Griffins in the first inning when she hit an RBI single through the left side bringing home Cordero (1-0).
  • Down 4-1 going into the fifth inning Focht again started the rally for Gwynedd Mercy, this time she drove home sophomore outfielder Ally McDaid (Maple Glen, Pa.) bringing the score to 4-2.
  • Carney would go on to single to center field allowing senior infielder Katelyn Barker (Newtown Square, Pa.) to cross home plate and bring the score within one (4-3).
  • A throwing error from the shortstop allowed three Griffins to score and eventually give Gwynedd Mercy the 6-5 victory.
  • Focht got her fifth win on the season (5-1), while Baumeister got her first (1) save of the year.

Gwynedd Mercy has a quick turnaround as they play again tomorrow Tuesday, March 21, against Ursinus College with a 3:00 P.M. and 5:00 P.M. start.
