Three Runs In The Ninth Give Griffins Win Over Patriots

Aston, PA - (3/15/2023) - Gwynedd Mercy University (6-4) played its first game since their Florida spring break trip as they took on the University of Valley Forge (5-5). Going into the ninth inning with the score being 5-5, the Griffins rattled off 3 unanswered runs in the ninth inning to win the game 8-5. Graduate infielder Billy Collins (Hatfield, Pa.) went 2-5 at the dish, including three runs-batted-in (RBI) and working a walk.

Griffin Highlights:
  • Going into the fourth inning Gwynedd Mercy was down 3-0. Freshman outfielder Sam Junker (Ambler, Pa.) worked a walk which brought home junior pitcher Frank Ebling (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and cut the lead to two (3-1).
  •  In the sixth inning the Griffins offense started to wake up. Freshman outfielder Chris Nodeland (Hamilton, N.J.) got things started by working a walk and allowing sophomore catcher Justin Smith (Broomall, Pa.) to cross home plate (4-2).
  • Just a few batters later, Collins got his first hit of the day resulting in a two-RBI single to center field bringing home Nodeland and Junker and tying things up 4-4.
  • Collins again came up big offensively for Gwynedd Mercy in the eighth inning. Collins laid down the bunt and was rewarded with an RBI single. Senior infielder Jake Martell (Levittown, Pa.) scored and tied things up 5-5 going into the ninth inning.
  • In the ninth inning, senior infielder Noah Andress (Levittown, Pa.) got a timely RBI single to left field bringing home Junker and giving the Griffins their first lead of the game 6-5.
  • An error from the Patriots' shortstop allowed two more runs to cross home plate and eventually give Gwynedd Mercy an 8-5 victory.
  • Junior pitcher Mitchell Bramsway (Temecula, Calif.) earned his second win in the young season (2-0) going 1.2 innings while giving up a hit and striking out four.
  • Ebling got the start going five innings and striking out nine.
