Griffins Take Two of Three From Nittany Lions

Philadelphia, Pa. - (3/18/2023) - Gwynedd Mercy University (8-5) took part in a three-game weekend series against Penn State Brandywine (6-7). Game One occurred on Friday night March 17, when the Griffins won 9-2. Games two and three took place on Saturday, March 18 as the Griffins dropped the first game 11-7 but came away with the series victory in game three with a 9-4 win. Senior infielder Billy Collins (Hatfield Pa.) went 4-10 (.400) including two home runs and nine runs-batted-in (RBI) in this weekend's series. 

Griffin Highlights - Game 1:
  • In the first inning, after two quick outs and a walk by senior infielder Jake Martell (Levittown, Pa.) Collins jump-started the Griffins' offense when he doubled to left field and brought home Martell giving the Griffins an early 1-0 lead.  
  • Down 2-1 going into the sixth inning, junior outfielder Frank Ebling (Cherry Hill N.J.) laid down a solid bunt forcing the third baseman into a throwing error and allowing Collins to score and tie the game back up 2-2. 
  • Later in the inning, with a full count senior infielder Nick Price (Levittown, Pa.) ripped an RBI single to center field bringing home senior infielder Noah Andress (Levittown, Pa.) (3-2).
  • Graduate outfielder Jack Jamison (Fort Washington, Pa.) grounded back out to the pitcher, but along with that brought home Ebling extending Gwynedd Mercy's lead 4-2 heading into the seventh inning.
  • Up by two going into the ninth inning the Griffins made sure to not let off the gas pedal as they brought home five more runs on two hits including Ebling's RBI single and Price's two-RBI double 
  • Senior pitcher Trey Livingstone (Pennsburg, Pa.) dominated on the mound earning the victory (1-1) going eight innings while giving up two earned runs, eight hits, and striking out eight. 

Griffin Highlights- Game 2:
  • After a rough first inning for Gwynedd Mercy they attempted to claw back. In the second Ebling singled to shortstop to bring home Andress and cut the lead down to 5-1. 
  • In the third inning, two Griffins scored off of walks from Andress and Price (5-3).
  • Down 11-3 heading into the seventh and final inning, Collins crushed a three-run home run to dead center bringing Gwynedd within 5. (11-6).
  • Sophomore catcher Justin Smith (Broomall, Pa.) also brought home a run in the seventh with an RBI single and cutting the lead to 11-7. 
  • Collins earned the loss (0-2) going three innings, walking three, and one strikeout. 

Griffin Highlights- Game 3:
  • In the second inning, freshman outfielder Chris Nodeland (Hamilton, N.J.) got things started for the offensive for both sides as he reached on a fielder's choice bringing home graduate infielder Rob Bailey (Abington, Pa.) and giving the Griffins an early 1-0 lead. 
  • In the fourth inning, three runs came across for Gwynedd Mercy on a single from freshmen catcher Sam Junker (Ambler, Pa.) a fielder's choice from Collins, and a walk from Price putting the Griffins up 4-0. 
  • Nodeland extended the lead to 5-0 after his RBI double to center field allowing Bailey to cross home plate.
  • Still in the fifth inning bases were loaded for Collins when he hit a no-doubter moonshot Grand Slam to left field and eventually gave Gwynedd Mercy their 9-4 victory. 
  • Sophomore pitcher Cooper Root (Runnemede, N.J.) earned his second win (2-0) in the young season going five innings, giving up three earned runs, walking two, and striking out two.

Gwynedd Mercy is back on the road Tuesday, March 21, when they travel to Rosemont College for a 3:30 P.M. scheduled first pitch.
