Davenport, FL - (3/10/2023) - Gwynedd Mercy University (4-4) went against Marian University (4-3) in a two-game stint. In game one, senior pitcher
Trey Livingstone (Pennsburg, Pa.) pitched a complete game (seven innings) while giving up only two earned runs on seven hits, and striking out six. The Griffins would go on to lose the game 6-4. In game two, senior infielder
Jake Martell (Levittown, Pa.) went 2-4 from the plate with two runs-batted-in (RBI) including one of those hits being a homerun to help split the series as Gwynedd Mercy took game two 8-6.
Game 1 - Griffin Highlights
- In the third inning, two sacrifice plays were made in order to tie the score 2-2. Graduate designated hitter Billy Collins (Hatfield, Pa.) brought home freshman outfielder Chris Nodeland (Hamilton, N.J.) with a sacrifice fly, while senior infielder Nick Price (Levittown, Pa.) laid down the sacrifice bunt to bring home Martell.
- Down 3-2 going into the fourth inning junior outfielder Frank Ebling (Cherry Hill, N.J.) changed that with a swing of the bat. He hit his first home run to left field and tied things up 3-3.
- Later in the inning Martell made solid contact with the ball reaching on a fielder's choice and brought home freshman catcher Sam Junker (Ambler, Pa.) and giving the Griffins their first lead of the game (4-3).
- Livingstone earned the loss (0-1).
Game 2 - Griffin Highlights:
- Down 1-0 going into the third Junker got things rolling for Gwynedd Mercy when he singled down the third base line allowing graduate outfielder Jack Jamison (Fort Washington, Pa.) to score (1-1).
- Collins ripped a 2-RBI double to center field giving the Griffins their first lead of the game (3-1).
- In the fourth inning a rally started for Gwynedd Mercy starting with Junker with an RBI double to center field bringing home sophomore first baseman Cooper Root (Runnemede, N.J.) (4-1).
- The next batter Nodeland hit a double as well allowing Junker to cross home plate and giving the Griffins a 5-1 lead.
- Martell was the next batter and had similar results, an RBI single to left field brining the score 6-1.
- With Gwynedd's lead dwindling down 6-5 heading into the sixth, Root worked a great plate appearance and earned himself a walk brining home Collins (7-5).
- In the seventh inning, Martell hit his first home run to left field this season and giving the Griffins an eventual 8-6 victory.
Gwynedd Mercy will play its final game down in Florida Saturday, March 11, when they take on Waynesburg University for a scheduled 10:00 A.M. first pitch.
