Auburndale, FL - (3/11/2023) - Gwynedd Mercy University (5-4) played its final game at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational as they came away with a win against Waynesburg University (3-5) 10-2. Graduate designated hitter
Billy Collins (Hatfield, Pa.) had himself a day at the plate going 3-4 with a game-high five runs-batted-in (RBI).
Griffin Highlights:
- Griffins got out to a fast start in the first inning when Collins hit a single to center field to bring home senior infielder Jake Martell (Levittown, Pa.) and give Gwynedd Mercy and early 1-0 lead.
- In the second inning, graduate outfielder Jack Jamison (Fort Washington, Pa.) hit a ground ball to first base, but allowed graduate infielder Rob Bailey (Abington, Pa.) to score (2-0).
- Collins earned his second RBI of the day in the third when he hit a sacrifice fly to right field allowing freshman outfielder Chris Nodeland (Hamilton, N.J.) to cross home plate (3-0).
- The next batter senior infielder Noah Andress (Levittown, Pa.) grounded out to shortstop but did his job bringing home Martell and extending the Griffins lead 4-0.
- Due to a balk that was issued, Gwynedd Mercy would score three runs in the third and bring the lead to 5-0.
- Jamison hit an RBI single in the fifth and brought the lead to 6-0.
- In the sixth inning, Collins hit a single to center field bringing home Nodeland (7-0).
- Just an inning later (7th) Collins this time would hit a 2-RBI single to right field which allowed Martell and Nodeland to cross home plate (9-0).
- In the eighth inning, junior outfielder Quindarius Dye (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) recorded his first hit on the year with an RBI triple and gave Gwynedd Mercy a 10-0 lead.
- Sophomore pitcher Cooper Root (Runnemede, N.J.) earned his first win on the year (1-0) pitching six solid innings giving up only three hits and striking out two.
Gwynedd Mercy is back in action Tuesday, March 14, when the travel to Penn State Abington for a 3:00 P.M. scheduled first pitch.
