Griffins Move On To Second Round With Penalty Kick Win Over Cavaliers

Radnor, Pa. - (10/28/2023) - The number six ranked Gwynedd Mercy University (8-4-5, 1-1-4) traveled to the number three ranked Cabrini University (6-8-2, 3-2-1) to battle in the first round of the Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Championship Tournament. In 200 minutes played this season, these two teams have been evenly matched as they tied 0-0 on October 4th. Similarly, neither team could find the back of the net in both regulation and in two ten-minute overtimes as this playoff matchup would be decided on penalty kicks. The Griffins would go on to win the nail biter by a final score of 4-3. Sophomore goalkeeper Madisson Ronn (Warrington, Pa.) started all 110 minutes in net for Gwynedd Mercy and in her postseason debut she was nothing short of sensational finishing with 13 saves including two in the penalty kick period in the win (2-4-5).
 
Griffin Highlights: 
  • In the penalty kick period, all four Griffins that took the PK attempt found the back of the net including, freshman midfielder Bridget Cannon (Bensalem, Pa.), freshman forward Demmi Fox (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.), freshman defenseman Elena DiPrinzio (Warrington, Pa.), and freshman forward Ksenia Semenovykh (Warrington, Pa.).
  • All game Gwynedd Mercy played unbelievable defense led by Ronn, DiPrinzio, freshman defenseman Jess Parker (Philadelphia, Pa.), junior defenseman Caroline Weir (Warminster, Pa.), freshman defenseman Rebecca Gordan (Sicklerville, N.J.), and sophomore defenseman Jordyn Fregia (Levittown, Pa.).
  • This is the first time since 2017 when the Griffins were a part of the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) that the team will be playing in the Semifinals of their conference. 
 
Gwynedd Mercy University returns to action on Tuesday, October 31, when they travel to the number one seed Marywood University to take part in the AEC Semifinals with the time to be determined.
