Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (10/12/2023) - Gwynedd Mercy University (2-6-5) played host to Penn College (6-4-3) for their final non-conference matchup of the 2023 season. It was not an ideal start for the Griffins as the Wildcats got out to an early 1-0 lead just 21 seconds into the contest, however a little over 25 minutes later freshman forward
Javier Hidalgo (Palisades Park, N.J.) put pressure on Penn College and took one for the team as he fouled hard inside the box allowing graduate midfielder
Hugh Lynch (Philadelphia, Pa.) an opportunity at a penalty kick which he did not miss (25:40) tying the game 1-1. Lynch's penalty kick goal was his first of the 2023 season. This would be the last goal scored and the match ended in a 1-1 tie.
Griffin Highlights:
- With the game drawing to a near and both teams tightening up, the Wildcats had a great opportunity at the 77:55 mark as a player for Penn College had a wide-open net opportunity, but was denied by sophomore midfielder C.J. Clyde (Southampton, Pa.) as he made his first defensive save of his collegiate career.
- Both teams had their opportunities offensively as the Wildcats outshot the Griffins 17-16.
- Graduate goalkeeper John Wagner (Phoenixville, Pa.) played all 90 minutes for Gwynedd Mercy in net as he finished with three saves in the tie (2-3-3).
Gwynedd Mercy returns to Atlantic East Conference play as they take on Immaculata University on Saturday, October 14, for a noon (12:00 p.m.) kickoff.
