Collegiate Firsts for Basile, Beinlich, and Gablein Guarantee Griffins Win Over Penn State Brandywine

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (9/6/2022) - Gwynedd Mercy University served as host to Penn State Brandywine today. The Griffins dominated play, outshooting the Nittany Lions 27-8 and earning their first win of the season by a 4-2 measure. Freshman forward Jordyn Basile (Quakertown, Pa) scored a pair of goals (23:50, 50:36) in the victory.

Basile not only opened the scoring for Gwynedd Mercy University (1-2), but she also netted her first career goal (1-0, 23:50) with a shot from the right corner that scooted between the goalkeeper's legs. Just a few moments later (27:36), fellow freshman forward Bethany Beinlich (Forksville, Pa.) netted her first career goal, completing a long pass from senior defender Claudia Krouse (Southhampton, Pa.) that gave Gwynedd Mercy University a 2-0 advantage. Penn State Brandywine (1-2) cut into the lead at 32:47, sending the game halftime with the Griffins holding a 2-1 lead. After intermission, Basile netted her second tally at the beginning stages of the second half (3-1, 50:36) and from there, the Griffins did not look back as freshman defender Natalie Gablein (Philadelphia, Pa.) added a fourth Griffin goal – and the first of her collegiate score - with a 75th-minute strike from 30 yards out (4-1, 74:21). Following a Nittany Lion tally in the 81st minute (80:19) the contest concluded in a 4-2 Gwynedd Mercy University victory.

Beinlich led all players with 12 shots followed by Basile with four. Sophomore Jenna Clarency (Philadelphia, Pa.) assisted on the Gablein goal while senior goalkeeper Molly Fleming (Warminster, Pa.) finished the game with four saves and the win (1-0).

Gwynedd Mercy University looks to continue their winning ways on Thursday, September 8, when they host the University of Valley Forge for a 4:00 p.m. kickoff.
