Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (9/6/2022) - Gwynedd Mercy University host Penn State Mont Alto this evening for their 2022 home opener. The Griffins showcased for the home crowd, controlling the contest with a 26-6 shooting advantage and a decisive 6-1 victory. Senior midfielder Hugh Lynch (Philadelphia, Pa.) led Gwynedd Mercy University with four points (1 goal, 2 assists) and a team-high six shots.
 
Right out of the gate, Gwynedd Mercy University (1-2) dominated the pace of the game with junior Mike Fienman (Philadelphia, Pa.) scoring (1-0, 4:25) on a loose ball off the Penn State Mont Alto (0-1) defense. Seven minutes later (11:37), a corner kick from senior Tyler Bascone (Wenonah, N.J.) found the head of junior defenseman Mert Yildirim (Levittown, Pa.) for the second Griffin goal; 2-0.
 
Much like the first frame, the Griffins wasted little time scoring their first second-half tally. Sophomore Kasey Wallace (Audubon, N.J.) provided the score, finishing a ball off the post from Lynch at 47:17; 3-0. The Nittany Lions struck back, cutting the gap back to two tallies, 3-1, with a score late in the 49^th minute (48:46). But it was the only tally they would muster as Bascone continued his incredible play from the corner with a direct kick over the Nittany Lions goalkeeper's shoulder; (4-1, 51:13). Senior midfielder Evan Kirby (Bensalem, Pa.) added a fifth Griffin goal on a through ball from Lynch in the 56^th minute (5-1, 55:33). Lynch finished off his helpful night with a goal of his own in the 64^th minute (6-1, 63:17); freshman midfielder Josh Rossell (Mount Ephraim, N.J.) provided the through ball this time.
 
Lynch and Wallace recorded six shots apiece for Gwynedd Mercy University. Fienman fired four and four other Griffins recorded two shots each. Sophomore goalkeeper Shaine Kirby (Newtown, Pa.) earned his first collegiate victory (1-0) with one a save in the affair.
 
Gwynedd Mercy University continues their schedule on Saturday, September 10, when they host FDU-Florham for a 12:00 p.m. kickoff.
