Competitive Four Sets Ends In A Griffins Loss

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. – (9/28-2022) – Gwynedd Mercy University welcomed Lancaster Bible College to the Griffin Complex for tonight's competition. The Griffins and Chargers battled through three tight sets before the visitors closed the match with a 25-9 fourth-set final; 3-1 (25-20, 25-22, 22-25, 25-9). Junior outside hitter Bria Purnell (Reading, Pa.) finished the match with a team-high 12 points.

Lancaster Bible College (5-8) scored seven of the first nine points, 7-2, but Gwynedd Mercy University (4-10) evened the score 14-14, before the Chargers took the initial advantage with a 25-20 win. The second set had a similar feel as Lancaster Bible College led 8-3 and the Griffins rallied for a 21-21 tie prior to a 25-22 Charger win. Looking to avoid the sweep the Griffins were able to control the third set thanks to a few service aces by senior libero Ashley Morris (Quakertown, Pa.) guiding them to a 25-22 win. Unfortunately, the Chargers stood tall to the noisy Griffin Complex and quickly turned a 12-9 lead into a 25-9 win with 13 straight points.

Purnell finished the match with 12 kills, two assists, and a dozen (12) digs. Morris additionally recorded an assist and 18 digs. Junior middle hitter Ashley Brown (Lansdale, Pa.) and junior outside hitter Julia Rabe (Virginia Beach, Va.) helped score points. Brown totaled 9.5 (9 kills, 1 block assist) points, while Rabe finished with eight points on five kills and three aces. Freshman setter Ayanna Gaston (Middletown, Del) offered a team-high 26 assists to go along with three kills, two aces, and nine digs.

Gwynedd Mercy University returns to action on Saturday, October 1, when they head down to Marymount University to open their Atlantic East Conference (AEC) schedule with a tri-match versus the Saints (12:00 p.m.) and Centenary University (NJ) (2:00 p.m.).
