Radnor, Pa. - (5/11/2022) - Gwynedd Mercy University (17-21) fell on the short side of a 22-2 final in today's Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Opening Round contest at #2 Cabrini University (31-9) as the Cavaliers overcame a Griffin run in the third inning with two of their own in the bottom of the frame, three more in the fifth inning, and 17 more between the sixth (14-1), seventh (15-1), and eighth frames (22-2). Jake Martell (Yardley, Pa.) put things in motion for both of the Griffins' runs; the first came with a two-out walk in the third inning, an error at short off the bat of senior right fielder
T.J. Brasier (Levittown, Pa.), a double steal, and a balk. The second came after a two-out single to short, a walk to Brasier, and pair of wild pitches.
Martell was 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs. A fourth-inning, two-out single from senior shortstop
Rob Bailey (Abington, Pa.) (1-for-3, BB) and a seventh-inning single from senior catcher
Nate Campbell (Royersford, Pa.) (1-for-3) accounted for the other two Griffin hits.
The AEC Baseball Championship Tournament moves to a central location for the first round of elimination competition. Gwynedd Mercy University is scheduled to play #4 Marymount University in a 9:00 a.m. game. that will be followed by a 12:30 p.m. contest between #1 Immaculata University and #2 Cabrini University. The winner of that game advances to the AEC Championship game, while the loser will play the winner of the #3 Griffins/#4 Saints game for the right to play for the league crown in a 4:00 p.m. affair.
