Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (4/9/2022) - Gwynedd Mercy University (2-4, 0-1) hosted Marymount University (1-6, 1-0) for this afternoon's Atlantic East Conference (AEC) season opener. The Saints owned the first point with a Griffin default at number three doubles, but an 8-1 number-two doubles win from senior
Jen Eisemann (Langhorne, Pa.) and sophomore
Avamarie Backich (Southampton, Pa.) and an 8-6 number-one doubles win from sophomore
Casey Meenan (Perkasie, Pa.) and sophomore
Moira Ryan (King of Prussia, Pa.) gave Gwynedd Mercy University a 2-1 edge. Unfortunately, Griffin defaults in the sixth and fifth individual flights, as well as a forfeit at number one singles put the Saints in the driver's seat; 4-2. Gwynedd Mercy University rallied to tie the match with an 8-2 fourth singles win from Backich and an 8-4 third-singles win from Ryan; 4-4. The decision came down to number two singles, where Eisemann battled valiantly to an 8-5 conclusion.
"Despite the shorthanded loss, I was extremely impressed by the way the team fought. Eisemann lived up to her captain title today and fought valiantly against a tough opponent. I am very proud of our effort." - Head Coach
Jim Holt
Gwynedd Mercy University continues their AEC schedule on Monday, April 11, when they visit Cabrini University for a 3:30 p.m. match.Â
