Pelczar Scores Six Times, But Saints Score AEC Prize

Washington, D.C. - (4/27/2022) - Gwynedd Mercy University (8-9, 1-4) and Marymount University (14-2, 4-1) concluded their Atlantic East Conference (AEC) and regular season schedules with this evening's league affair. Consecutive unassisted scores from senior midfielder Anna Grace Bernicker (Merion Station, Pa.) (5-3, 6:05), sophomore attack Kristin Varilla (Lansdale, Pa.) (5-4, 3:42), and senior attack Laura Pelczar (Philadelphia, Pa.) (5-5, 2:57) tied the contest at 5-5 late in the first quarter. Unfortunately, it was not late enough as the Saints scored three times before the end of the frame; 8-5 (0:10). The Saints held a slight 3-2 advantage in the second quarter, working around two more Pelczar goals (13:53, 9:54) for an 11-7 (3:05) halftime lead. Their separation came in the third frame, where Pelczar (12-8, 13:26) matched the initial Marymount University tally (12-7, 14:47) before seven straight home scores distanced the Saints for an immediate 19-8 (4:02) edge and an eventual 23-13 (0:37) win.

Pelczar totaled six goals while recovering two ground balls and causing two turnovers. Bernicker and Varilla scored three times apiece; the former added two ground balls and seven draws to her scores while the latter supported her tallies with a pair of ground ball recoveries. Senior midfielder Meleah Hoats (Conyngham, Pa.) and senior defender Seydel Acuna (Philadelphia, Pa.) both caused two turnovers. Hoats scored the last Griffin goal (22-13, 3:33 4QTR) and Acuna also recorded a ground ball. In goal, junior Reilly Owens (Pottstown, Pa.) totaled 14 saves and two ground balls in the loss (8-8, 53:23).

Gwynedd Mercy University finishes the 2022 regular season with an 8-9 overall record and a 1-4 AEC standing. They await seeding in the upcoming AEC Championship Tournament which opens with quarterfinal play on Saturday, April 30.
