Myrtle Beach, S.C. - (3/8/2022) - Sophomore
Jocelyn Baumeister (Willow Grove, Pa.) recorded 23 strikeouts between her starts versus St. Elizabeth University (1-0) (L, 1-3 on Mar. 7; 6.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R 2 ER, 7 BB, 14 K) and Thiel College (4-0) (5.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 9 K) to headline a 0-4 beginning to Gwynedd Mercy University's (0-4) eight-game schedule at Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic. Baumeister cruised through the first four innings of the season as she recorded the Griffins' first dozen (12) outs via the strikeout. Unfortunately, a sixth-inning sacrifice fly from junior center fielder
Emma Carney (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) was not enough to turn the tide in a narrow 3-1 final. Baumeister totaled 14 strikeouts over six innings of work and took the loss (0-1) despite only allowing two earned runs. On Tuesday (Mar. 8) versus Thiel College (4-0), Baumeister went through three innings with six strikeouts before running into some trouble in the fourth inning. There, the Tomcats scored three runs thanks to a pair of singles and an inside-the-park home run. They added five sixth-inning runs to cut the contest short; 8-0 (6). Baumeister exited the game after the fifth inning; she took the loss (0-2) despite striking out nine.
Offensively, Baumeister also leads Gwynedd Mercy University with three runs-batted-in (RBI); she is 2-for-7 with a double and a run. Sophomore infielder
Shylynn Cordero (Allentown, Pa.) was the only other Griffin to record multiple hits (2-for-9, .222) thus far, while junior infielder
Allison Ross (Philadelphia, Pa.) is the only other Griffin to record an extra base hit (2B vs. Penn State Harrisburg, Mar. 8).
After their 3-1 loss to St. Elizabeth University, the Griffins were no-hit in a 7-0 loss to Montclair State University (1-1). Tuesday's (Mar. 8) contests ended up with the Griffins on the short side of a 10-2, five-inning final versus Penn State Harrisburg (4-1) and an 8-0, six-inning final versus the Tomcats.
Gwynedd Mercy University continues their stay at Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic tomorrow, Wednesday, March 9, with contests versus Cedar Crest College (9:30 a.m., Field 4) and Madonna University (11:30 a.m., Field 5).
