Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (3/30/2022) - Only one goal separated Gwynedd Mercy University (6-5) and Ursinus College (6-3) at the end of the first quarter as a pair of goals from sophomore attack Kristin Varilla (Lansdale, Pa.) (12:58, 10:50) were followed by a 4-1 Bear run; 4-3 (1:19). Unfortunately, the contest would not remain close with Ursinus College outscoring Gwynedd Mercy University 9-0 in the second quarter, 13-3 (1:12), and 6-0 in the third quarter; 19-3 (1:25). The Griffins showed heart with the first four goals of the final frame. Senior attack Anna Grace Bernicker (Merion Station, Pa.) scored the first (19-4, 12:35), while senior attack Meleah Hoats (Conyngham, Pa.) scored the second (19-5, 11:42) and the fourth (19-7, 4:49) with an assist to senior midfielder Laura Pelczar (Philadelphia, Pa.) (19-6, 7:10) in between. Two closing tallies left the final spread at 14 goals; 21-7 (1:46).

Hoats headlined the Griffins with four points (2 goals, 2 assists), two caused turnovers, and a draw control. Varilla finished with three goals, three ground balls, and a caused turnover. Pelczar added two ground balls, a caused turnover, and three draw controls to her tally, while Bernicker provided two draws in excess of her score. Freshman defenseman Cheyenne Avellino (Egg Harbor, N.J.) headlined the Gwynedd Mercy University backfield with a ground ball, a caused turnovers, and two draw controls. In goal, junior Reilly Owens (Pottstown, Pa.) (6-5) totaled 13 saves, three ground balls, and two caused turnovers.

Gwynedd Mercy University completes their non-conference schedule on Wednesday, April 6, when they visit Goucher College for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
