Griffins Score Last Three For Win Over Gophers

Towson, Md. - (4/6/2022) - After leading the Gwynedd Mercy University (7-5) charge, senior attack Laura Pelczar (Philadelphia, Pa.) and sophomore attack Kristin Varilla (Lansdale, Pa.) traded off on the last the goals of the game, propelling the Griffins to a 13-10 victory at Goucher College (2-10). Pelczar added an assist, two ground balls, three caused turnovers, and a caused turnover to her five goals. Meanwhile, Varilla's six scores came with two ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Pelczar score the first Gwynedd Mercy University goal to tie the contest, 1-1, with 11:53 remaining in the first quarter. The next two Griffin goals came from Varilla (7:49, 2:31) and got GMercyU out of the first frame with a 3-2 edge. Unfortunately, a 5-2 Gopher second quarter put the halftime spread in the home team's favor; 7-5 (0:13). An unassisted score from senior attack Anna Grace Bernicker (Merion Station, Pa.) knotted the game at 7-7 with 13:11 remaining in the third quarter and soon after fellow senior attack Meleah Hoats (Conyngham, Pa.) gave the Gwynedd Mercy University the go-head goal; 8-7 (11:56). A pair of Varilla goals (4:13, 2:33) kept the Griffins ahead at the fourth-quarter break, 10-8, before the Pelczar/Varilla finale delivered the victory.

Junior goalkeeper Reilly Owens (Pottstown, Pa.) earned the win (7-5) with 11 saves, five ground balls, and two caused turnovers. In front of her, senior defense Seydel Acuna (Philadelphia, Pa.) led the Gwynedd Mercy University with four ground balls and three draw controls. Hoats added ground ball to her tally, while Bernicker's two points (goal, assist) came with a draw control.

Gwynedd Mercy University opens their Atlantic East Conference (AEC) schedule on Saturday, April 9, when they visit Immaculata University for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
