true 2 READING, Pa. – Gwynedd Mercy went 1-1 in a tri-match with Albright College and Penn College of Technology on Saturday morning.
In the season opener, Albright rallied from a 2-0 deficit to upend the Griffins 3-2 (25-20, 25-20, 21-25, 17-25, 9-15). Ashley Brown and Julia Rabe both recorded a team-high 11 kills while Bridget McTamney recorded a double double (25 assists, 17 digs) along with 2 aces. After dropping the first two sets, Albright came out on top in the third and fourth sets to eventually win the match in the fifth set.
Aybria Purnell contributed 7 kills in the loss for a team total of 34 while Brown and Ashley Morris recorded 14 and 16 digs each.
The Griffins rebounded in their second match sweeping Penn College 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-18). Gwynedd and Penn College went back and forth in the first set until Gwynedd pulled away to take the 1-0 lead. In the second set, the Griffins came out hot on a 7-0 run until the Wildcats had their own 5-point streak. The Griffins sealed the set win with a kill by Brown. The Griffins came out victorious in the third set following a kill and an ace to end the match.
Brown led the way with 7 kills, 2 aces, 2 blocks, 3 assists and 13 digs. Bridget McTamney recorded another 25 assists and both Lauren Yancer and Morris delivered double digit digs with 12 and 11. Gwynedd Mercy racked up 31 kills in their victory with Julianne Dove and Caitlin Tusman each tallying 6 and 5 kills.
Gwynedd Mercy will see its next match on Wednesday when they travel to Widener for a 7 p.m. showdown.
