GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – The Gwynedd Mercy Women's Soccer Team was victorious Wednesday evening pulling out a solid 3-2 win over Cairn University.
In the first half, the Highlanders tallied first and held a 1-0 lead until the Griffins answered 15 minutes later. Avamarie Backich found the back of the net to even the game at 1 until Keyra Heinlein added another score for the home team.
Minutes later, Cairn knocked one in to even the score at 2 going into halftime. The score remained the same throughout the second half until Julie Smuskiewicz scored the go-ahead goal in the 81st minute of the match.
Although Cairn out-shot Gwynedd 17-13, the Griffins took full advantage of the opportunities they were given. Heinlein had a match high 5 shots while Smuskiewicz, Backich, Carissa Manero, Nicolette Conway, Laura Pelczar and Raegan Kennedy also contributed to the shot total.
Molly Flemming did her job in the defensive end making 7 saves for the Griffins.
The women's soccer team looks to continue their winning ways when they travel to St. Davids, Pa. Tuesday, September 28 at 4:00 p.m. to take on Eastern University.
