DOVER, DE. -- Gwynedd Mercy split an Atlantic East Conference Doubleheader at Wesley on Saturday to keep their playoff chances intact. The Griffins fell, 11-3, in the day's first game, but rebounded for a big 17-9 victory in game two.
Game one
GMercyU was limited to three hits off of Wolverine Cole Davis who struck out seven with eight walks on three hits and three unearned runs.
The Griffins got on the scoreboard in the fifth on a bases loaded walk from
T.J. Brasier. Gwynedd crossed two unearned runs in the seventh on two hits and two errors.
Billy Collins and
Brett Swire were each 1-for-3. Swire added an RBI in the seventh.
Game two
Collins,
Bobby Heck, and
Nick Price all had three RBI's apiece as the squad used three big middle innings to open up a sizable lead.
Heck went 4-for-4 as he tied a career high with those four hits.
Rob Bailey added two doubles and two RBI's while
Shaun Thomas scored four times.
Starter
Brian Wildrick allowed just three earned run on six hits with two walks and five K's over six-plus innings to pick up the win.
Bailey's two-run double in the fourth was part of a five-run frame. After crossing a run in the fifth, the team again plated five runs, this time in the sixth keyed by Price's two-run single.
Gwynedd Mercy will face Neumann in a three-game set starting on Thursday in a single nine-inning affair at home. With identical conference records, the Griffins and Knights will battle to see who can claim the final playoff spot.
