Knights Trump Griffins In AEC Doubleheader

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy was on the wrong end of a doubleheader sweep as Neumann took a pair of Atlantic East Conference games on Tuesday. The Knights won game one, 7-1, and the nightcap, 9-3.

Game one
The Griffins were looking to rally late from a two-run deficit, but Neumann plated four runs in the top of the seventh.

Shylynn Cordero collected three of the team's six hits in the first game with Jocelyn Baumeister driving in the lone RBI in the fifth.

Starter Maddy McBride sent the Knights down in order in the first and second innings, but back-to-back walks to start the third helped Neumann score three times on two hits and a sac fly.

In that sixth, Brianna Polly led off with a single to center, then sacrificed to second. After an infield single from Cordero, Baumeister singled home Polly to get GMercyU on the board. The squad left two runners on base in that frame to try and rally back.

McBride pitched into the sixth where she yielded just the three runs on three hits.

Bri Lagroteria was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI's for the Knights.

Game two
This time it was Gwynedd scoring first as Emily Shaheen crossed home on an RBI groundout from Baumeister in the first. Neumann would score a run in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to build a 4-1 advantage.

The Griffins had their best chance to score in the bottom of the fifth, getting the bases loaded with one out but a pop up and grounder ended the threat.

In the sixth, Polly made a stellar defensive play, throwing out a runner at home on a fly ball to left field.

However, the Knights used a late burst, getting five hits in the seventh leading to five runs in the inning.

Gwynedd did not go down without a fight in their last at-bat. With runners on first and second with two outs, Emma Carney doubled home both to cut into the deficit.

Carner and Baumeister each had two hits in game two. Shaheen doubled and scored as well. Starter Ashley Focht took the decision as she threw into the sixth inning.

The Griffins are back at it on Friday as they continue AEC play with a twinbill at Wesley.
