GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Visiting Marymount took two from Gwynedd Mercy in an Atlantic East Conference Doubleheader on Saturday as the Saints won the first game, 7-3, and the second, 3-1.
Game one
The Griffins looked to rally from a 3-0 deficit with two runs in the fifth, but the Saints crossed two runs in in both the sixth and seventh innings.
After a scoreless first three innings, Marymount went ahead 1-0 on an RBI single in the fourth. GMercyU looked to threaten in the bottom half, getting the bases loaded with two outs but could not get on the board.
The Saints' Alex Lemery knocked in a run as part of a two-spot in the fifth. Back-to-back singles and a hit by pitch to start the bottom of the frame loaded the sacks once again. An RBI groundout from
Jake Martell made it 3-1, and after a Marymount pitching chance,
T.J. Brasier singled home
Jack Jamison to cut the deficit to one. The Saints used an inning-ending double play to get out of the jam.
Lemery hit a two-out, two-run double in the sixth then the Marymount defense turned their second double play of the game in the bottom half with runners on first and second.
Starter
Brian Wildrick threw into the sixth inning, fanning three while yielding four earned runs on nine hits. Brasier and
Will Brownlowe each had two hits while Martell walked twice and scored.
Lemery was 4-for-4 with three RBI's and three doubles for the visitors.
Game two
Gwynedd got a nice start from rookie
Frank Ebling who made his first career start. The freshman struck out five and walked just two while scattering three runs on four hits in six-plus innings of work.
Down 1-0 in the fourth, Jamison worked a bases-loaded walk to knot the game up. However, the Griffins left the bases loaded in the frame.
In the top of the sixth with runners on second and third,
Nick Price's diving stab at a sharp grounder down the line saved an extra base hit, but a run would score. Later in the frame, Lemery scored on an RBI single to make it a 3-1 contest.
Rob Bailey came in relief in the seventh and allowed just one baserunner with no hits, but the Griffins came up short in their rally, having just three batters reach base over the final three innings.
Martell and
Shaun Thomas each walked twice with
Billy Collins scoring the lone run in the fourth.
The Griffins are back at it on Friday when they open a weekend set at home with Cabrini in AEC action. First pitch here in Gwynedd Valley is at 3:30 p.m.
