GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy won a home postseason game for the first time in nine years in their 13-9 quarterfinal victory in the Atlantic East Women's Lacrosse Tournament over Neumann Saturday evening.
The fourth-seeded Griffins move on the semifinal round where they face Cabrini the top seed on Wednesday in a time TBA.
For the contest,
Victoria Braeunle had the hot hand, scoring a game-high six goals as GMercyU opened a six-goal lead early in the second half where they held off a pesky Neumann squad.
Laura Pelczar netted a career-high four goals with
Damali Teagle scoring twice and
Anna Bernicker also tallying for the home team. Goalie
Reilly Owens made 10 saves in net.
For the fifth-seeded Knights, Brylin Adams recorded three goals with Jay Murray and Kerri Mallon each added two. Keeper Catriona Corrigan notched seven saves for the visitors.
Just like their regular-season meeting, the scoring was scarce in the first half. Neumann scored twice in the game's first 10 minutes before Braeunle potted her first on the night at the 17:14 mark. The team erased a 3-1 hole over a nine-minute span thanks to scores from Braeunle, Pelczar and Bernicker. Adams and Braeunle traded goals late in the half but it was the Griffins leading 5-4 at the break.
Pelczar would net three of her four goals after halftime including a later tally with 3:40 remaining to make it a three-goal contest. Teagle added her second of the day at 18:52 for their largest lead of the contest (10-4).
The Knights would not go away, scoring the next five goals over the next 11 minutes to climb within one. Adams' third goal made it a 10-9 game with 6:47 to play.
Bernicker and Teagle lead the team with four groundballs apiece. Bernicker also collected a career-best three caused turnovers.
