Softball Sweeps On Senior Day

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy enjoyed its Senior Day with a sweep of Immaculata on Saturday in Atlantic East action. The Griffins rallied for a wild 15-11 victory in game one, then held off the Mighty Macs in an 8-6 win in the second.

Between games, the team and coaching staff honored Chelsea Briggs, Kaylee Craig, Brianna Polly, and Emily Shaheen with their families for its Senior Day festivities.

Game one
The Griffins tied a season high with 14 hits as the team came back from an early 8-1 deficit. Polly and Emma Carney each drove in three runs. Polly's three hits tied a career high to boot while her three knocked in were a personal best.

After a six-run third from IU, the Griffins responded with five in the bottom half on four hits and an error that led to two runs. In the fourth, GMercyU struck again using an RBI single from Briggs, a run-scoring groundout from Craig, and a big two-out RBI triple from Polly to take a 10-9 lead.

IU's Jess Oldham drove in one of her four runs in the game in the fifth to tie things up at 10-10.

Gwynedd exploded for five runs in the sixth highlighted by a two-run double from Carney for some much needed breathing room. The Mighty Macs crossed a run in the seventh and had runners on, but reliever Ashley Haggerty got the last out on a force out and picked up her first win in the process.

Oldham was 4-for-5 with two runs scored. Teammate Cat Noll was 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBI's.

Ashley Focht went 2-for-4 with three runs scored while Shaheen walked twice and stole a base.

Game two
Polly's heads-up play in the fourth helped break a 4-4 tie and turn the game's momentum towards the home team. With two outs, Polly stole second, moved up to third on a wild pitch and later score the go-ahead run as she stole home. That surge went into the next inning where the Griffins plated three runs for a four-run lead.

Focht went the distance in the circle to notch her second win in as many days. She worked out of jams in the second and fifth, and was able to cap IU's comeback bid in the seventh. At the plate, she went 3-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Grace Scally also added three hits. Scally and Carney each scored twice in game two.

Oldham was again a thorn in the Griffins' side, going 3-for-4 with five RBI's including a two-run homer in the second and a two-run double in the third.

The Griffins are back at it on Friday when they welcome Wesley for two here starting at 3 p.m.
