GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy pulled away from visiting Immaculata, 13-5, in an Atlantic East Conference matchup as the Griffins celebrated Senior Day.
GMercyU netted six-straight goals to cap the scoring, turning a 7-5 lead with 13:44 remaining into a big conference victory.
Victoria Braeunle tied a career-high with seven goals to lead all scorers as the senior potted five tallies in the second half alone. The seven goals also moved the senior into fourth place on the program's all-time goal list.
Jill Kane and
Laura Pelczar each added two goals with
Damali Teagle and
Meleah Hoats netting one apiece.
The Griffin defense led by goalie
Reilly Owens limited the Mighty Macs to two second half goals. Reilly finished the day with 10 saves while the team totaled 12 caused turnovers. In the draw control department, Pelczar led the team with six, Teagle collected five and Braeunle had four.
Scoring was at a premium in the first half as the Griffins went ahead 2-0 early in the contest only to see Immaculata tie things up midway through the stanza. IU got a late score in the half to cut the Gwynedd lead to 4-3.
After Immaculata's Erynn Kriebel opened the second-half scoring 4:11 into the period, Braeunle found the back of the net three times over a seven-minute span for a 7-4 lead. Liza Laxton scored for IU at the 13:44 mark, but it would be the last goal for the visiting team as the Griffins clamped down to notch the win.
Prior to the game, the team and coaching staff took time to honor the team's seniors: Braeunle, Kane
Victoria Mollitor, and Maddy McCue along with assistant coach
Samantha Brown who had her 2020 senior season cut short. The players celebrated with their families and received a framed jersey.
Gwynedd Mercy closes out the regular season Wednesday, April 14th when they host Neumann in an AEC contest starting at 4 p.m.
