GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy split a pair of matches with visiting Marywood as the Griffins closed out their shortened season and had the chance to honor their two seniors in an action packed Saturday.
Prior to the start of the action, the team and coaching staff honored their two seniors,
Cait Saalfrank and
Kaylee Craig as well as their parents in a pregame ceremony.
In the day's first match, GMercyU rallied to win the final two sets for a 3-2 victory. However, the tables were turned in the second as the Pacers rallied in the fifth set for a 3-2 decision.
Three players all finished in double-figure kills led by a freshmen duo of
Ashley Brown and
Aybria Purnell who each had 14.
Caitlin Tusman added 10. Purnell (14 digs) also joined
Bridget McTamney (38 assists/12 digs) in registering a double-double.
Down 2-1 heading into the fourth set, Gwynedd fought off an early seven-point hole to finally tie it up at 21-21 after an ace from Saalfrank. However, Marywood scored the next three points and had the Griffins on the ropes with game point, but the team rallied after a timeout to notch five-straight points of their own to force a fifth and deciding set.
Gwynedd Mercy raced out to a 6-1 edge before the Pacers raced back into it, getting within 10-8. Kills from Craig and Tusman were part of their game-clinching run to end it.
Craig added four kills and three blocks while Saalfrank collected a match-high 26 digs.
The Griffins looked to rally from a 2-0 deficit in game two and would use a big push in the fourth set but came up a bit short in set #5.
Brown and Purnell again led the team with 14 kills apiece respectively while McTanmey was four kills shy of a triple double (six kills/36 assists/13 digs).
After Marywood won two close sets, the Griffins dominated the third, totaling 10 kills and just one error.
GMercyU found itself again fighting off match point in the fourth set, coming back from a 24-22 score, to net four points in a row to push the teams to another fifth set. The squad stormed out to a 6-1 lead and later a 12-5 score before Marywood ran off a 10-1 burst to salvage the split.
