GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy Field Hockey Team gave first-year head coach
Alex Calder her first victory as the Griffins downed Immaculata, 3-1, in their season debut on a chilly Senior Day Saturday.
After the game, the team took time out on the field (socially distanced of course!) to celebrate its five seniors and their families;
Allison Campbell,
Kathryn Lehman,
Alyssa Tomsic,
Michaela Swenk, and
Abi Kennedy.
First-half goals from Swenk, Tomsic and
Lauren Jani put GMercyU in the driver's seat, giving the team a comfortable lead at halftime.
The Mighty Macs got on the board late in the third but were stymied by the Griffin defense, who did not yield a recorded shot in the final quarter to help seal the win.
All four field-playing seniors recorded a point while Kennedy needed one save in goal on three shots. Lehman's insert pass on a penalty corner to Swenk was right on the mark as Swenk teed it up and blasted one home for a 1-0 score with 8:59 left in the first. Later on another corner, it was Swenk who set up Tomsic to add to the lead.
Campbell fed Jani for an early score in the second to account for the scoring the team totaled eight shots and eight corners on a very blustery cold afternoon.
Maddy Edwards had the lone score for Immaculata.
The two team will meet next Wednesday at Immaculata in a 4 p.m. start.
