DOVER, DE. -- Gwynedd Mercy Women's Lacrosse outlasted Wesley College in a 21-19 victory on the road in Atlantic East Conference action on Saturday for their first win on the season.
Damali Teagle led the offensive attack with a career-best five goals.
Jill Kane and
Anna Bernicker each added four goals with Kane chipping in a pair of assists to give her a personal-high six points.
Victoria Mollitor added three scores with a helper and eight draw controls.
Goalie
Reilly Owens recorded 15 saves between the pipes while Wesley's Katelyn Porter made 13 stops.
Teagle put the Griffins on the scoreboard with a pair of back-to-back free position goals. Kane and
Victoria Braeunle added two more to put GMercyU up 4-2 with just under 14 minutes remaining in the first half.
The Wolverines would retake the lead, but Kane evened the score 5-5 at the 12:31 mark with an unassisted tally.Â
Laura Pelczar would score for the visitors in a back-and-forth contest.
Mollitor put the Griffins up for good with three unanswered of her own in a two-minute span. Bernicker would continue the stretch with a pair of free position goals for the Griffins to lead 11-8 at the break.
Holding a one-goal lead, Braeunle put Gwynedd up 12-10 at the 27-minute mark in the second half. The lead grew to 15-11 lead with 19:32 remaining after Teagle added another pair of free position goals followed by a Bernicker unassisted tally.
The trio of Teagle,
Meleah Hoats and Kane would stretch the lead to 20-15 with just over 12 minutes remaining.
Wesley would answer, cutting the lead to two but a Bernicker unassisted goal with 2:40 remaining gave the Griffins a three-goal advantage and helped to stave off any comeback from the home team.
The Griffins returns to action on Wednesday in their home opener when they host Marymount at 4 p.m. in Atlantic East action.
