GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Our Coaching Q&A – Five Questions for Coach continues with our spring coaches. Today we're introduced to
Joe Dare, who heads up both the Griffin Cross Country and Track & Field Programs.
- Who/What made you get into coaching?
I always loved the sport of Running. When I was in 3rd grade, I started running with my aunt and ran all through college. While at college, I remember getting upset in a certain workout and told my coach I knew what these guys are going to do in this particular workout. My coach quickly laughed and said you can see the coaching side and asked 'Have you thought about getting into coaching?' And when I graduated college, I started reading and following the books about coaching & training guidelines he gave me. I quickly realized I loved it. My passion and enthusiasm is shown in my coaching style which helps me elevate the team!
- What (and from whom) is the best coaching advice you have received/learned?
My college coaches Coach Torpey & Coach Bell, have helped me understand coaching is more than just X's and O's for coaching. I read just about everything: business books, motivational books, and how to understand the connection with your athletes. The best advice I got was from these two. I am forever grateful for having them be my coaches in college and having them be mentors to me along the way. Terrence Mahon and Joe Puleo both have given me great training advice. These two great professional coaches have given me the time to sit down and discuss their training philosophies. We've spent many hours helping me understand the science of running. Lastly Jayson Resch taught me why you need to be organized and showed me the commitment that is needed to succeed. I will continue to learn from everyone but these five are the ones who I am happy to have worked and learned with.
- What is your favorite coaching moment(s)?
I have a lot of great coaching moments that mean a lot to me. But my favorites are when the athletes nail their race, jump or throw and you can see their excitement/energy, that it was all worth it to them.
- What is your favorite tv show/movie?
Depends on the day. But growing up I would watch MacGyver, Scrubs, How I Met Your Mother, and 24. Now with all these apps out, we are watching Doctor Who, Beat Bobby Flay, Guys Grocery Games and I love watching football.
- What are your coaching goals here at Gwynedd?
To educate our athletes and continue them to have a meaningful experience on and off the track while they are here at Gwynedd Mercy.
