#3 Griffins to host #6 Knights in Opening Round of 2021 AEC Field Hockey Championship Tournament

2021 AEC Field Hockey Championship Tournament Announcement
Lancaster, Pa. – (10/29/2021) – With the conclusion of the 2021 regular season schedules throughout the league, Commissioner Jessica Huntley has official released the field for the 2021 Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Field Hockey Championship Tournament. Undefeated in league play, St. Mary's College of Maryland (9-7, 5-0) will serve as the top seed, while at 4-1, Cabrini University (9-8, 4-1) earned the #2 seed; both teams receives byes through Saturday's (October 30) Opening Round of postseason competition. As the #7 seed, Gwynedd Mercy University (5-11, 3-2) is scheduled to host #6 Neumann University (2-13, 0-5) in a 1:00 p.m. on October 30.
 
The opposing AEC Opening Round contests includes #5 Immaculata University (4-14, 1-4) at #4 Marywood University (9-8 2-3) (1:00 p.m.). After the conclusion of the Opening Round, the lowest remaining seed will travel to #1 St. Mary's College of Maryland, while the second lowest remaining seed will travel to #2 Cabrini University for semifinal contests on Wednesday, November 3. The 2021 AEC Field Hockey Championship game is scheduled for Saturday, November 6, at the site of the highest remaining seed.
 
In their initial meeting, a pair of second-quarter goals gave Gwynedd Mercy University the AEC victory over Neumann University. Freshman attack Cheyenne Avellino (Egg Harbor, N.J.) (20:48) and senior attack Lauren Jani (Coopersburg, Pa.) (28:05) were the difference makers scoring at 20:48 and 28:05, respectively. The Griffins held a 12-0 edge over the Knights in both shots and penalty corners, paving the way for freshman goalkeeper Morgan Lawless (Bristol, Pa.) (5-11) to earn her second shutout of the season. She totaled five saves in the win. Jani led the Gwynedd Mercy University offense with four of the Griffins' dozen shots; her accomplice on second goal - junior attack Victoria Poust (Warminster, Pa.) - recorded three shots. Senior defender Kaci Murray (Chalfont, Pa.) totaled two shots, while Avellino and two others each taking a shot.
