RADNOR, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy was knocked out of the Atlantic East Women's Basketball Tournament with a 93-87 loss at Cabrini in a semifinal matchup Wednesday night.
Sydney Thompson netted a team-high 19 points while
Haley Crossley added 13 points and 11 boards but the Griffins, who battled back from a double-digit deficit in the fourth quarter, were not able to grab the lead.
For the Cavaliers, the second seed, Meghan Matthews totaled 29 points and 22 rebounds, both game highs. Lexi Edwards (24 points), Ashley Tutzauer (20 points), and Kirsten Searcy (10 points) also hit double figures.
The Griffins looked to erase a 24-11 hole after the first quarter in the second. A 13-5 run capped by a
Kelly Owens three pointer made it a five-point game at the 6:28 mark. Later in the frame, two free throws from
Haley Crossley cut it to two (42-40) with just under a minute before halftime. Cabrini tacked on four more points to lead by six at the break.
In the third, the Cavaliers had their largest lead of the game (70-53) late in the frame, but the Griffins got a big three from Owens and a last-second bucket from Thompson to shrink it to a 12-point game.
GMercyU kept fighting, using a 7-0 run in the latter stages of the fourth to make it an 87-83 contest with three minutes remaining. The team however, could manage one field goal in the final 1:10 as Cabrini added two free throws from Matthews to account for the final tally.
Along with Thompson and Crossley,
Tolu Omole (12 points),
Jill Kane (11 points), and
Carley Huggard (10 points) all registered double figures. Owens finished with eight points and four steals while Omole doled out a game-high six assists. For Huggard, the 10 points were a career high.
The loss marks the end of the journey for the team's three seniors: Omole,
Chyanne Fine and
Denise Sacco who amassed over 60 wins, four playoff appearances, and a conference championship (2017) in their time as a Griffin. Â
