Men's Basketball Edges Wesley In Senior Day Thriller

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy fought off Wesley in the regular-season finale at The Griffin Complex on Saturday, topping the Wolverines, 97-94, on Senior Day.

Before the game, the team and coaching staff took time to pay tribute to the team's three seniors: Rich Dunham, Austin Harriott, and Somah Slewion.

With the victory, the team has clinched the #2 playoff seed and a first-round bye in next week's Atlantic East Tournament. They will host a semifinal game here on Thursday staring at 7 p.m. against the lowest seed that advances from the first round. The Wolverines are #1 seed in the playoffs.

Dunham was the team's leading scorer, netting 28 points and four players finished in double figures. Harriott added 19 points and a career-high 13 rebounds with Slewion netting 10. Nathaniel Walker kicked in 11 as the Griffins, who led by as much as 18 points in the first half, held off a late Wesley push.

Brian Cameron led the Wolverines with 37 points and 11 boards. His three-point attempt in the final seconds from the top of the key was off helping to secure the outcome. Teammate Greg Bloodswoth added 22 while Terrence Braxton netted 12.

In the first half, after eight lead changes early on, GMercyU put together a 20-8 run to open up a double-figure lead. The team shot over 63% to help keep that advantage until the break. Harriott's hustle play off an inbound pass beat the buzzer to give the Griffins a 56-42 lead at halftime.

Wesley was able to whittle down the Griffin lead to single digits midway in the second. Up 73-66 with 8:54 to go, Dunham was fouled while attempting a three. He would hit all three attempts at the line then add a bucket off a turnover in the next possession to the lead back up to 12.

Three's from Jalen Henry and Manny Clark were part of a 10-3 spurt to turn a two-point game into 93-84 score with 2:32 showing. The Wolverines did not go quietly, outscoring Gwynedd, 10-2, capped by a three from Bloodswoth from the right corner to make it a one-point game (95-94) eight ticks to go. Dunham was fouled in the inbound and sent to the line where he hit both, setting the stage for the final possession.

Dunham went a perfect 10-for-10 at the free-throw line. It was the sixth time this season he did not miss when taking seven or more attempts at the charity stripe.
