WASHINGTON, D.C. -- After receiving their Atlantic East Conference Championship rings on Wednesday the Gwynedd Mercy University baseball team hit the road traveling to Washington D.C. for three games.
On Friday, the Griffins defeated Stevenson University 5-2 to open the Gallaudet Bison Classic to pick up their first win of the 2020 season.
Brian Wildrick threw seven scoreless innings while striking out five to nail down the win on the mound.
Liam Sullivan finished the final two innings, as the senior closed it out with a double play to end the Mustang threat in the ninth.
Bobby Heck and
Will Brownlowe each recorded a pair of hits and added an RBI.
Justin Blakey and
Billy Collins each drove in a run as well.
The Griffins scored early in the first inning when Collins drove in
Rob Bailey. In the fourth
Nate Campbell scored on a wild pitch and later in the inning Blakey plated
Nick Price on an RBI groundout for a 3-0 lead after four full innings.
GMercyU added another pair of insurance runs in the seventh when Heck singled in Blakey. Brownlowe would then later double to score Heck for the 5-0 lead.
Stevenson scored a pair of runs in the eighth on a two-run double from Billy McAdam but Sullivan would get a strike out and ground out to get out of the frame.Â
The Mustangs would load the bases in the ninth with one out but Sullivan worked his magic again getting the final batter to ground into a double play to
Jake Martell.
The Griffins return back to action tomorrow for a pair of games taking on Muhlenberg at 10 a.m. followed by Gallaudet at 2 p.m.
