Season Opener Foiled On Late Goal

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- King's outscored Gwynedd Mercy 5-1 over the final 7:40 of the second half as the Griffins had their season opener end up as a tough 14-13 decision Wednesday afternoon.

Goals from Samantha Brown, Victoria Braeunle, and Victoria Mollitor gave GMercyU a quick 3-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of the contest. But the Monarchs potted four-straight over a three-minute span then tack on three more to go up by three scores with 6:31 in the stanza. Gwynedd put together a late push, getting a pair of goals from Mollitor and Brown under a minute before halftime to cap a four-goal spurt to take a 7-6 lead at the break.

In the second half, the Griffins led or were tied for 28:14 of the period before King's took their first lead since the first with a tally from Natasha Koslop with 1:46 for a 14-13 score. Gwynedd was unable to get a possession in the final moments to force overtime.

Brown, Mollitor, and Braeunle all finished with four goals each with Jessica Ziegler adding a single score. Laura Pelczar totaled a team-high two assists. Braeunle also contributed five groundballs, five draws, and three caused turnovers. Freshman goalie Reilly Owens made 13 saves in her Griffin debut.

For King's, Koslop totaled three goals but it was Emily Sims who registered five points on four tallies and a helper. Goalies Orla Cottell made three stops in the first half and Jessie Smalley had two in the second.

The team is back in action on Saturday when they travel to Wilkes.
