ASTON, PA. -- A career high 23 points from
Somah Slewion sparked the Gwynedd Mercy University Men's Basketball team to a 69-64 victory at Neumann University on Saturday. The senior shot 7-of-15 from the field connecting on four three pointers which was also a personal best.
Rich Dunham added 17 points along with six assists while
Jordan Perkins rounded out the scoring column with 10.
Slewion scored the Griffins first eight points to give the visitors an early advantage. A pair of Perkins layups gave GMercyU a 12-5 lead with just over fourteen minutes remaining in the first half.Â
Matt Carter drained a three pointer at the 9:13 mark to keep the Griffins ahead, 20-14.
A Dunham triple capped a six-point burst to stretch the lead to twelve (32-20) with just under five minutes remaining in the half. Layups from Dunham and
Donaven Spencer would close out the half with the Griffins ahead, 41-26.
Spencer's bucket gave GMercyU their largest lead of the contest (50-32) when he connected on a three pointer at the 15:28 mark in the second stanza. Neumann would answer over the next eight minutes cutting the lead to four twice but Dunham would respond with a layup and three pointer at the 5:42 mark for a seven-point lead (59-52). Neumann did not go away and erased their deficit to one (64-63) with just under two minutes remaining. The leadership of Slewion and Dunham would respond with Slewion connecting on a triple with thirty two seconds remaining and Dunham icing the game with a pair of free throws with twelve ticks left to help cement the 69-64 victory.
Spencer led the Griffins defensively with 13 rebounds and five steals.
For Neumann, Waheem Lowman led the Knights with 20 points. Sanoussi Abdourhaman added 13 points and a game-high 14 caroms.
The Griffins will now turn their attention to Wednesday when they host Immaculata at 8 p.m. in conference action.
