Late Goal Lifts Field Hockey Over Scranton

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy improved to 3-0 on the season as Caitlyn Thornton knocked in the game-winning goal with under a minute to lift the Griffins to an exciting 2-1 victory over Scranton Tuesday night.

Thornton's second tally of the season came with just 40 seconds as she took an insert pass from Erika Cimino and lifted it over Scranton goalie Claire McAllister for the eventual deciding score.

After a scoreless first quarter, Ryan Murray scored her first Griffin goal at the 11:39 mark of the second quarter as she got a good piece on a through pass from Michaela Swenk. The Royals had a good look right before halftime but goalie Abi Kennedy turned away a shot attempt from Brianna Witt to keep it 1-0 at the break.

Scranton (0-2) was able to tie things up on a score from Allie Benadon early in the third. But from there, Gwynedd pressed on, both offensively and defensively, resulting in seven shots and seven corners in both the third and four quarters while yielding that only shot in the final 30 minutes.

GMercyU produced five corners in the fourth, looking for the go-ahead goal. Cimino was able to thread a pass off a restart through traffic to Thornton for her second career game-winning goal.

Kennedy finished the evening with four saves while McCallister recorded two.

Gwynedd Mercy welcomes Oneonta here on Saturday in a 3 p.m. start.
