GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Griffin Field Hockey Team made it five-straight to open their season as Gwynedd Mercy got a late goal to nip visiting Arcadia, 2-1, Wednesday.
GMercyU improves to 5-0 and is one win away from tying their best start to a season (2017).
A scoreless first half saw the Knights lead on the stat sheet, getting five shots and seven corners. The Griffins came out after halftime to produce 11 second-half shots.
Gwynedd thought they had a 1-0 lead with 7:06 in the third as a blistering shot at the top of the arc off a penalty corner was deemed dangerous. Less than a minute later,
Alyssa Tomsic made sure hers counted as she knocked home her third goal on the year, giving the Griffins 1-0 lead heading into the fourth.
Arcadia knotted things at 1-1 when Mickie March tallied with 11 minutes to go.
Minutes later on their only penalty corner of the quarter,
Ryan Murray was able to get a stick on a rocket shot from
Michaela Swenk to turn the momentum back for good. The goal was the second on the season for Murray.
Goalie
Abi Kennedy, who was named a
PhilaFieldHockey.com  Defensive Player of the Week earlier in the day, recorded two saves, but the Griffin defense limited the Knights to just two shots in the second half. Ashton Evans made four stops for Arcadia.
The Griffins are back home on Saturday when they welcome FDU-Florham in a 2 p.m. start.
