MADISON, N.J. -- Gwynedd Mercy split a tri-match at Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham on Saturday to start off the 2019 season. The Griffins fell to the host Devils in an exciting five sets (25-21, 17-25, 25-20, 23-25, 15-13) in the day's first match, but rebounded with a 3-1 victory over Rutgers-Newark (29-27, 25-15, 14-25, 25-20).
Against FDU-Florham, a couple of career records were set in the five-set contest.
Kerry McGlinn hit personal highs with 12 kills and 30 digs.
Bridget McTamney added career bests in digs and blocks while leading the team with three aces.
McGlinn, McTamney, and
Madelyn Mosser each registered double-doubles as the Griffins forced a fifth and deciding set with their 25-23 win in the fourth. First-year players
Layne Morgan and
Julianne Dove each added seven kills in their first action as a Griffin.
Mosser recorded a career record and team high with 16 kills against Rutgers-Newark as McTamney added her second double-double on the day (35 assists/16 digs.)
The Griffins won the first two sets after totaling double-digit kills in each but fell in the third as the team hit just 7-10-42 (-.071%). GMercyU rebounded in the fourth to close out the game and earn the split.
Gwynedd returns to action on Tuesday when they head to Rosemont.
