ASTON, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy closed out Atlantic East Conference play by splitting a doubleheader at Neumann on Sunday, taking the first game, 15-6, but falling in the second with same exact score.
The team finishes conference play at 8-4 along with Marymount, but the Griffins hold the tiebreaker due to their DH sweep on Monday, thus giving GMercyU the #2 playoff seed.
Gwynedd Mercy will host one of the two Atlantic East Conference Tournament Pods this weekend along with the Marymount and Neumann.
Game one
The Griffins homered four times while nine of their 14 hits went for extra bases. The team never trailed, as three runs in the sixth an four in the seventh helped open up an 8-6 game at the time.
Nick Mulvey was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI. Brother
Jason Mulvey also added three hits along with three RBI's and four runs as well as one of the four homers.
In their first at-bat, Gwynedd got a two-run double from
T.J. Brasier and a two-run blast from
Tommy Nardini to key a five-run frame.
Ryan Keen delivered a big two-out, two-run single in the second to help team lead, 7-3.
Sachael Sciarretta led off the fourth with a homer to left however, the Knights crossed two unearned runs in the fifth to climb within two runs.
RBI hits from the Mulvey brothers plus a sac fly from
Dave Tatoian made it 11-6. Gwynedd added some insurance as both
Josh Lopez and
Jason Mulvey each cranked out a pair of two-run homers.
R.J. Boyle picked up the win, going five innings, allowing two earned runs on eight hits to improve to 2-3 on the season.
Game two
This time it was the Knights breaking a 3-3 tie in the fourth and later a 7-5 game with runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
Jake Martell was a tough out, going 4-for-5 with three RBIs, two runs, two doubles, and a stolen base.
Rob Bailey chipped in three hits while scoring twice.
Neumann plated five runs in the seventh and added four more in the eighth to help piece together the final score.
Gwynedd Mercy will host Cairn on Monday and Haverford on Tuesday before opening their playoff journey on Friday.
