Griffins Fall In Close One To Cairn

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Cairn scored a run in the seventh and another in the ninth to break a tie game to go on and down Gwynedd Mercy, 7-5, Monday afternoon in a non-conference matchup.

Tommy Nardini homered in his third-straight game, going 2-for-4. Ryan Keen also went deep, a two-run shot in the fourth. Dave Tatoian had two hits and two walks and in the process took the all-time program record for total bases, now with 323 in his career.

Nardini led off the second with a solo shot which was part of a three-spot to take a 3-1 edge but the Highlanders countered in the third, scoring four times, three of which were unearned.

Keen's homer tied things at 5-5 and it stayed that way until the seventh. After Cairn plated a run on a bases loaded walk, the Griffins escaped further harm getting out of a jam with the sacks full and one out. Reliever Liam Sullivan entered and got a pop up and grounder to end the at-bat.

Gwynedd would get runners on first and second with one out in the bottom half of the seventh but an attempted tag to third base on a fly to center resulted in a double play. The Highlanders tacked on an RBI single in the ninth for a two-run lead.

In the Griffin's final at-bat, Keen led off and reached by hit by pitch. Josh Lopez doubled to right to put runners at second and third with no outs. After two pinch hit strikeouts, Justin Curtin smacked a ball to gap in right center but it was tracked down for final out.

The team now prepares to host one of the two three-team pods in the Atlantic East Baseball Tournament. The second-seeded Griffins will play #5 Neumann at 9 a.m. and #3 Marymount later in the day at 4 p.m. The Knights and Saints battle it out at 12:30 p.m. Action continues on Saturday.
