DOVER, DE. -- Gwynedd Mercy punched their ticket to the Atlantic East Women's Lacrosse Tournament with their wild 25-21 victory at Wesley on Wednesday evening.
The Griffins claim the sixth and final seed in the conference playoffs which kick off this weekend. GMercyU will play at third-seeded Marymount on Saturday in a first-round matchup.
Victoria Braeunle set a single-game record with 16 draw controls and tied a career high with 10 points and seven goals on the night, adding three assists, four groundballs and three caused turnovers.
Goalie
Julia Smith recorded a season-high 15 saves with nine in the second half. The teams combined for 91 shots.
Samantha Brown and
Victoria Mollitor each added six scores while
Jill Kane (three),
Laura Pelczar (two), and
Madison McCue also tallied for Gwynedd.
Brown kicked in a personal best five caused turnovers and added four draws and four GB's.
The Griffins never trailed in the contest, leading by as much as six in the first half. The Wolverines, who were led by Paige Brehm's six goals, got within 19-17 with just over 13 minutes to play. Brown added two scores in the final 10 minutes including one with 3:08 remaining helped GMercyU clinch the win and a playoff berth.
Kaila Hindt totaled five goals and four assists for Wesley with goalie Maria Rowland making 11 saves.
