GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy celebrated its two seniors, but it was Marywood who spoiled the party, taking both games of an Atlantic East Conference Doubleheader on Tuesday. The Pacers slipped past the Griffins, 4-1, then took the second, 19-9.
Prior to the game, the coaching staff and team took a moment to honor their two seniors,
Rebecca Christoffers and
Alex Kinal.
Game one
Both teams had chances to get on the board, including a prime spot for Gwynedd in the third. With runners on second and third and one out, the Griffins hit two hard liners but unfortunately were right at the Pacer defense.
Scoreless to the fifth, Marywood scored all three of their runs with two outs, including a pair of unearned runs off an error.
In the sixth, after a two-out double from
Amanda Clark,
Tori Sherwood knocked in the lone Griffin run with her single to center to cut it to 3-1.
Marywood took advantage of a two-out error in the seventh to plate another run to restore a three-run lead.
Sherwood had two of the team's six hits in the first game
Game two
A wild game that saw the teams combine for 27 hits, an 11-run second inning from the Pacers proved to be the difference as Gwynedd put together prime offensive stretches.
Clark finished with three hits while Sherwood and
Chelsea Briggs each had two. Sherwood, Briggs, and
Alyssa Cowan each scored twice with Christoffers and
Emily Shaheen driving in two runs each.
After the big inning by the Pacers, the Griffins looked to battle back. In the third, the squad had six hits and took use of three Marywood errors to score six runs (five unearned). However, the visitors answered with a seven-spot in the very next inning on three hits and six walks.
With conference play in the regular season finished, the Griffins will be the #6 seed in this weekend's Atlantic East Tournament. They'll play at top seeded Neumann at noon on Friday then square off with these same Pacers, the #4 seed right after. With a win in one of the two games, they'll move on to Saturday where they can advance to next weekend's championship series.
