Softball Spring Break Day 1-2 Recap

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Gwynedd Mercy kicked off their 2019 season at the Fast Pitch Dreams Classic in North Myrtle Beach on Sunday. Here's a quick rundown of the first three games of the trip:

Coe 9, Gwynedd Mercy 1
Sunday's season opener under new head coach David Hoch got off to a rough start as Coe's Alyssa Olson struck out 12 Griffins while allowing just one run on four hits. Amanda Clark had two of the four hits, including an RBI single in the first inning. The Kohawks plated runs in the bottom of the first, second fifth and sixth innings.

King's 7, Gwynedd Mercy 6
In the first game of the day on Monday, the Griffins let a 6-4 lead slip out of their grasp as King's scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to go on a stifle a slugfest that saw 23 hits. Chelsea Briggs went 3-for-4 with four RBI's, Rebecca Christoffers smacked a solo home run and Alyssa Cowan added a pair of doubles.

Gwynedd Mercy 4, Penn State-Abington 2
In Monday's second game, the Griffins notched their first win and first victory for head coach David Hoch, ironically against the team he coached from 2011 to 2018. GMercyU erased a 2-0 deficit with three runs in the fourth, keyed by a two-run single from Cowan. Cowan struck again in the sixth with an RBI double to help add some insurance for starter Melissa Hess. Hess worked all seven innings, scattering two runs on seven hits, with five walks, and seven strikeouts. Tori Sherwood added two hit and two runs scored in the win.

Tuesday's game with Penn State-Harrisburg was cancelled and will not be made up on the trip. However the two teams will meet again in a DH on March 26th. On Wednesday, the team tackles Anna Maria at 11:30 a.m. and Cedar Crest at 1:30 p.m. Thursday's action sees Gwynedd taking on Michigan-Dearborn before Friday's contest with Chatham.
