Baseball Spring Break Day 1-3 Update

WINTER HAVEN, FL. – Saturday and Sunday saw the Gwynedd Mercy Baseball Team open play down in Florida on their Spring Break Trip. Here's a quick recap of the games so far:

Louisiana College 11, Gwynedd Mercy 5
In Saturday's contest, the Griffins saw the Wildcats score 10 unanswered runs in the first game down South.  A Josh Lopez RBI single in the second, followed by a four-spot in the third helped GMercyU to a 5-1 advantage. However, the Wildcats countered with four runs in the fourth and two in the fifth to take back the lead. Sachael Sciarretta, Nick Mulvey, and Dave Tatoian each had two hits and a run scored for Gwynedd. Bryan Kaelin took the loss after yielding five runs on five hits while fanning five in 4.1 innings of work.

On Sunday, Gwynedd picked up their first wins on the year in sweeping a DH against King's. In the first inning of game one, the Griffins scored six times and did not look back. Tatoian and Justin Curtin each drove in three runs apiece. The team took advantage of four Monarch errors to score six unearned runs. Gino Tripodi worked five innings to pick up the victory as the senior struck out four, walked just one and allowed four earned runs.

In game two, rookie Cameron Culver earned his first collegiate win on the mound, throwing five innings, allowing just three earned on five hits with four K's and two walks. Tatoian stayed hot, getting three hits, while Tommy Nardinia, Jason Mulvey, and Bobby Heck each had two hits. After King's scored twice in the fourth to cut to a two-run game, Liam Sullivan entered the sixth and didn't allow a hit followed by Tatoian who picked up the save getting all three outs on strikeouts to complete the sweep.

Tuesday's game with St. Joseph's of Maine was rained out and will not be rescheduled. Action concludes on Wednesday when they play RPI at 9 a.m. and then a 1 p.m. game with Wartburg.
